CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) Savings Calculator

According to ENERGY STAR, a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), a single CFL will save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in less than 6 months at the current electricity rate for the Town of Amherst area. A CFL bulb will also use 75 percent less electricity and last much longer than an incandescent bulb. Consequently, promoting CFL adoption over conventional incandescent bulbs is a major part of County's energy efficiency promotions.

The ENERGY STAR website proclaims that if every American home replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL, the energy saved would be enough to light more than 3 million homes for a year and prevent the equivalent emission of green house gases of more than 800,000 cars!

Use CFL Savings Calculator to estimate how much you save when switching from one incandescent bulb to an equivalent brightness CFL bulb. It's easy!

Choose the incandescent bulb wattage using the drop down menu. The wattage of an equivalent brightness CFL bulb will be automatically selected.

Use the slider to select the number of hours the bulb is ON per day - from 0 to 24 hours. The CFL's Annual Savings will update automatically.

The savings is calculated using fixed commodity rate of $0.08339 per kWh. Actual savings may vary.
