CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) Recycling

CFL contains a very small amount of mercury - an average of 4 milligrams in each bulb - according to the ENERGY STAR website. Because CFLs contain trace amounts of mercury, it is important to know about the proper use, recycling and disposal of CFL bulbs.

Because CFLs use much less electricity than traditional light bulbs, less mercury is emitted from power plants. This is why the EPA, DOE, NYSERDA and others are promoting the use of CFLs.

The small amount of mercury in a CFL is significantly less than the amount of mercury avoided as a result of the energy savings.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends recycling and responsibly disposing of CFLs at the end of their life cycle.
